Niji-Iro Update 3-16-18

Dear Niji-Iro Families,

にじいろ小学校 保護者の皆様へ

Only one more week until spring break! I think we can all use a break from this cold weather. Please remember to continue to have your children dress to go outside for recess.

A Community With Character/個性を尊ぶコミュニティー

We focused on Integrity again in Monday’s morning meeting. We recognized the students who received awards at the Japanese Quiz Bowl at Eastern Michigan University over the weekend. The students from Niji-Iro swept the elementary division of the Nengajo Greeting Card contest.

We also recognized more students for being Caught With Character for showing Integrity, Grit, Empathy, and Responsibility.

また、「Caught With Character」~性質で示そう~では、誠実さ、胆力、共感と責任感を示した児童たちを発表しました。

At the end of morning meeting, Ai Sensei and the 4th grade led the singing of Hana wa saku (flower will bloom) in honor of the anniversary of the devastating earthquake that Japan on March 11, 2011.

Also, Theater students from Eastern Michigan University put on a presentation of Tomato Plant Girl. It was a great message for students about what it means to be a good friend and how it feels to be the new kid and fit in. A big thank you goes out to our PTA for organizing the visit.

March is Reading Month/3月は読書月間

We are down to our Final Four books for our March is Reading Month Madness brackets. Interrupting Chicken will face off against Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors on the English side, and 11 Cats and Digging in the Earth will battle each other on the Japanese side. The students will vote on a winner next week!

We have one more spirit days left:

Friday, March 23 - Literary Characters-dress as your favorite book character

March 14

As you probably know, March 14 was the day when many students walked out of class to honor the victims of the tragedy that happened in Parkland, Florida last month. At the elementary level, we chose this time to provide a message of kindness. I spoke over the PA system and encouraged all the students to provide acts of kindness to their classmates. Not only does this make us feel better, but scientists have found that being kind reduces stress and is very good for your health.

We will begin M-Step testing after break for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. The window for M-Step is April 30 to May 25 for 3rd and 4th grade and April 9 to May 4 for 5th grade. I will send out specific dates when we get closer to the testing window. The best thing your child can do to prepare, which is important every day,  is to get a good night’s sleep and have a healthy breakfast.
